Not every car check costs money. A free VIN decode and recall check answers a lot before you pay for anything. Here is what free covers, what paid reports add, and how to choose between them.
1. What a free VIN check covers
Decoding the VIN tells you the make, model, year, engine and factory, and shows official safety recalls — free, with no account. That is enough to spot a wrong listing, an unrepaired recall, or a VIN that does not match the car.
2. What paid reports add
Paid services such as Carfax and AutoCheck add data a decode cannot: reported accidents, past owners, title brands, and sometimes service records. For a car with a complicated past, that extra history can be worth the fee.
