NICB VINCheck: the free US theft & salvage check
NICB VINCheck is one of the few genuinely free US vehicle checks. Run by the National Insurance Crime Bureau, it answers two narrow but important questions about a VIN. Here is what it does — and what it doesn't.

1. What NICB VINCheck is
The National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) is a US non-profit funded by insurers to fight vehicle crime. Its free VINCheck tool lets you enter a VIN and see whether the car has an insurance-reported record of theft or a salvage total loss.
2. What it shows
VINCheck flags two things from participating insurers: a vehicle reported stolen and not recovered, and a vehicle recorded as a salvage or total loss. If a US car you are looking at comes back with either flag, that is a serious warning before you send any money.
3. Its limits
VINCheck only covers data from participating NICB member insurers, and only theft and salvage — not title brands from every state, not accident history, not mileage. A clean VINCheck result does not mean a clean car; it means those two specific records were not found.
