P0440Evaporative Emission Control System Malfunction

The evaporative emission (EVAP) system traps gasoline vapors from the fuel tank so they don't escape into the air, and burns them in the engine later. This general code means the computer detected a fault somewhere in that sealed vapor system, often a leak. A loose or faulty gas cap is a very common trigger.
